Drop the Word Artificial
The term artificial intelligence gives teams an excuse to avoid accountability. These systems are real. Treat them that way.
The phrase artificial intelligence made sense fifty years ago. Now it’s a hiding spot.
Any system that takes input, makes decisions, and causes downstream effects is real. It runs on real hardware, burns real energy, and changes real outcomes. Calling it “artificial” doesn’t make the consequences fake.
The Excuse
Teams still talk like this:
- “It was only model output.”
- “The system was just suggesting.”
- “The agent hallucinated.”
This language puts distance between the system and its effects. But in practice, the effects are already happening. Someone reads the output and acts. A tool call fires. A bad assumption spreads through a pipeline.
If a system can change decisions, it’s operational. Calling it artificial is just a way to dodge responsibility.
What to Build Instead
Stop asking “is this really intelligent?” and start asking “is this accountable?”
That means:
- Budget every decision. Attach compute, memory, and energy costs to every action path. Know what you’re spending.
- Log what actually happened. Record state changes, tool calls, and dependencies for every consequential output. No black boxes.
- Define what’s allowed before execution. Compile policy into machine-checkable rules. Don’t audit after the fact.
- Label what can’t be undone. Every action should be tagged: reversible, maybe reversible, or permanent.
- Test failure on purpose. Break parts of the system and confirm it degrades safely, not catastrophically.
The question shifts from “did the output sound right?” to “can we prove this system behaves within bounds?”
The Only Distinction That Matters
Forget organic vs. synthetic. A human operator can cause a disaster. A machine agent can prevent one. The substrate doesn’t determine the risk.
What matters is simpler:
- Does the system have clear constraints?
- Can you trace what it did and why?
- Can you reverse it when it’s wrong?
- Does failure stay local?
Measure It or It’s Just Talk
If you’re serious about this, put numbers on it:
- Energy per verified action — what does each policy-checked action actually cost?
- Irreversibility ratio — what fraction of automated actions can’t be undone?
- Unauthorized action count — how many privileged actions lack explicit approval?
- Trace coverage — what percent of decisions have a complete, replayable log?
- Time to safe mode — how fast does the system reach a safe state when something breaks?
The Hard Parts
This isn’t free. Instrumentation adds overhead. Policy rules drift from the actual legal text. Teams game metrics. Reversibility is genuinely hard in distributed systems with external side effects.
These are engineering problems, not reasons to stop. We solve harder problems in databases every day.
Retire “artificial” as a safety boundary. There is only intelligence running on different hardware with different failure modes.
The systems that win won’t be the most human-like. They’ll be the ones you can actually hold accountable.
